![]() If you treat the vertical measures as arbitrary, you just end up with an arbitrary oblique, not an isometric projection. The vertical increments represent measures equal to those represented by the diagonal increments. Note that an isometric grid has vertical increments, not just diagonal increments. ![]() These are the proportions of an isometric grid, as in Gravit. The result will be an isometric ellipse correctly aligned to its “thrust line” (the perpendicular axis). By scaling and skewing, you would scale the round artwork horizontally 70.71% (sine of 45°) and vertically 81.65° (cosine of the isometric angle). In order for scaling and skewing to yield correct results, both the horizontal and vertical scale have to be in correct proportion before skewing. (This is one of the classic “dead giveaways” of error in isometric drawing). If the scaled and skewed result were in correct proportion, the shortest distance across the resulting elliptical pencil would be parallel to the “left” (150°) diagonals of the grid. In the preceding post, note that the original artwork of the bent pencil is circular. In any axonometric orientation, the minor diameter of an ellipse representing a circular shape is aligned to the perpendicular axis which it “orbits.” ![]() Merely scaling something horizontally to an arbitrary amount and skewing it 30° does not result in an isometric proportion.
